In spring, the whole valley erupts in blossom: apricot, cherry and peach trees turn the mountainsides pink and white against snow-capped peaks. In autumn, the same landscape burns gold and amber.

The crucial first burn: to get the most from your candle, let the first burn melt the wax right across to the edge of the vessel. This avoids a memory ring and tunnelling.

Wick care: always trim the wick to 5mm before lighting, and keep the wax pool free of debris, wick trimmings or matches, which can make the flame burn unevenly.

Where to burn it: choose a well-ventilated room away from draughts, vents or fans. This keeps the flame steady and stops black soot marks forming on the glass.

Putting it out: I recommend a candle snuffer or wick dipper. It reduces smoke and avoids splashing hot wax.

Storage: keep your candle lidded in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight to protect the fragrance oils and prevent discolouration.
