What's it all about?
In 1967, after the 6 day war, Israel took control of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It also criminalised public displays of the Palestinian flags. During this time, the symbols of the watermelon featuring red, white, green and black of the Palestinian flag, were used as a means to circumvent the restrictions. As the fruit naturally grows in the region, protestors also had easy access to them and would therefore carry slices during demonstrations.
The ban of the Palestinian flag was later lifted after the signing of a series of interim peace agreements called the Oslo Accords in 1993 but the symbol remained and is still used today.

Today as the atrocities continue to take place on the people of Gaza, these watermelon shoppers are our way of silently showing support for the people of Gaza, that they have not been forgotten and we stand by them on a humanitarian front. We'd like as many people as possible to use these as a reminder to our government that the war in Gaza must stop.
